Our debut CD Holding Patterns was funded by a grant from The Aaron Copland Fund for Music Recording Program through the Pauline Oliveros Foundation (now known as the Deep Listening Institue). Holding Patterns is a compilation of live recordings selected from Zanana's first season of performances. Gasholder Duet is an improvised duo of unprocessed acoustic sounds recorded live inside the historic Gasholder Building in Troy, NY. Doorjam and Ghost Dog combine live processing of both the voice and trombone sampled in real-time with prerecorded soundfiles of ambient recordings made at the Gasholder Building and prerecorded and electronically processed voice soundfiles. Flags , Title X , and What a Pretty Dog were recorded live in concert in New York City. Poet Barbara Barg provides the text for Flags and joins the duo on spoken word on What a Pretty Dog in honor of Monique's dog Suki, who was accustomed to hearing this phrase regularly from strangers throughout her life.

 

Gasholder Duet (2002) - 10'36" (24.3 MB)

This improvised duo of unprocessed acoustic sounds was recorded live August 9, 2002 at the historic Gasholder Building in Troy, NY. The Gasholder Building is a large, round brick building approximately 40 yards in diameter with a domed roof which was built in 1873. The building was a shell around a huge iron gasholder that rose and fell according to the amount of gas being stored. Kristin sounds the edges while Monique sounds the middle. Recording by Kristin Norderval, mastering by Paul Geluso.

This was recorded October 31, 2002, at the Harvestworks Digital Media Arts, where both Monique and Kristin were 2002 Artists-in-Residence. Kristin and Monique do live processing of their improvisations using their Max/MSP patches along with those written by David Gamper, Holland Hopson, Dafna Naphtali, and Stephen Moore. Recording and mastering by Paul Geluso.
